There is an art to everything we do; from doing the dishes to painting a masterpiece, and all art forms deserve our respect. To succeed in politics is no less an art, yet at times we ridicule them so much. Perhaps it's because most politicians seem to leave their artwork at home the moment they are elected.

A Sign That Something Is Very Rotten in Denmark

Dan Carruthers had listened intently to everything that Jack Faulkner had told him. On the one hand, he was pleased that his instinct for a good story had paid off, albeit thanks to his daughter Amee, who had initially alerted him to the possible link between Tolfer and Garcia. Now, as he digested the information provided by Jack, there appeared, however, to be more questions than answers.

Although Dan hadn't heard the recorded conversation between Tolfer and Garcia, as Jack had hidden the memory stick for safekeeping, he was in no doubt that Jack's verbal report was accurate. Jack Faulkner was too experienced to be sloppy, and Dan had heard enough to confirm his earlier suspicion that Tolfer was in deep with Garcia. What puzzled Dan the most though, was the notion that Tolfer would send a bulldog to retrieve the recording. It just didn't ring true.

In Dan's experience, normally, when a politician says something he or she shouldn't say, they contact the journalist involved and plead their case. If that doesn't work, they go to the news editor. The fact that Tolfer was having a homosexual affair with a younger man was hardly newsworthy, and in any event bisexuality wasn't a crime and Garcia was old enough. Sure, Tolfer was married, so it was a bit low rent, but why send the bulldog? Then of course, there was the savage beating Garcia had received at the hands of two intruders. Were these people also sent by Tolfer?

Dan thought it over for a moment and then concluded, no, none of this rings true. So, either someone else is involved, or William Tolfer has taken a serious trip to the dark side.

Yet there was another aspect to Jack's story that worried Dan. Terry Royston, the bulldog, was now dead. What was even more troubling was that when someone falls off a ten-story building, the press is usually alerted. Furthermore, a few passers-by, who had seen Royston fall, had contacted the paper. But when the Herald crime reporter rang the police to get some more details, the police claimed no knowledge of the incident. Yet Jack's apartment had been over-run by police shortly after the event, followed by a visit from a mysterious Commander Draper from Special Operations.

The more Dan Carruthers thought about the events, the more mystified he became. Why would Special Ops be involved? Their normal domain is terrorism or narcotics and the odd threat against a politician. Hang on, did they believe that Tolfer had hired Royston, or did they think
